Founded in 1986,
the Colyton Parish History Society has 150 members whose aim is to
encourage and promote the study of local history.
The society has a collection of deeds, documents, books,
photographs, maps, and other records relating to Colyton's history.
Additions to this collection are most welcome; items can be left
for copying with Colin Haynes at Haynes Hardware, Market Place, Colyton
(please record your name and address clearly before handing in your
material for copying).
Family History:
The society had a research facility for family history, but
since the loss of our History Centrebuilding this work is scaled down.
However, the society will continue to provide limited help for anyone
wishing to research family history or any other aspect of Colyton's past.

Colyton in the War: In 2005, the
History Society put on an exhibition to mark the 60th anniversary of the
end of the war. A series of filmed interviews took place with locals
remembering their experiences. The society felt that this material
deserved a proper record as a book and a CD for the benefit of
present and future generations. Please click the Literature button
on the menu.
THE LOCAL HISTORY CENTRE -- NOVEMBER 2008 NEWS STATEMENT
Our lease arrangement with East Devon District Council, for our temporary
Local History Centre in the car park, ended in December 2008. Since its
opening in 2003 we have actively sought a more permanent location within
the town, but regrettably no suitable site was found. After a
comprehensive review, the decision was taken to close the facility.
The centre helped introduce many people to Colyton's fascinating and
historic past. In addition the centre provided a Devon County Council
Record Office Service Point which had been operated by the society since
1989. The support, encouragement and good will from the parish council,
chamber of feoffees and business association has been much appreciated. In
addition we owe a great debt of thanks to all our volunteers who gave up
their time to man the centre; without them it would not have been made to
function. |
