ABOUT THE SOCIETY

Founded in 1986, the Colyton Parish History Society has 150 members whose
aim is to encourage and promote the study of local history.

Activities:
A programme of talks on a variety of local history subjects; many given by members
presenting the results of their own research.

Town Tours:

Throughout the year the Society can arrange guided tours of
the town and St Andrew's Church for pre booked parties.

The Local History centre:
  • The Colyton Parish History Society has a Local History Centre containing an exhibition and Family records.
     
  • Click the 'Local Centre' button on the menu to see the centre
     
  • The Local Centre houses an exhibition, a research facility, and the Society's collection of deeds, documents, books, photographs, maps, and other records relating to Colyton's history.
    Additions to this collection
    are most welcome; items can be left for copying with Colin Haynes at Haynes Hardware, Market Place (please record your name and address clearly before handing in your material for copying).

Research
A number of research projects have been undertaken or are under way. These include;
the architectural history of St Andrew's church, the water mills of the Coly Valley,
a record of the headstones in the cemetery, old pubs and inns, and the Monmouth Rebellion.
